Today, it is not good enough to just be a little bit better than the amateurs, because people won’t notice. We have to be fantastic at photography to set ourselves miles apart and, if we are in it for the money, to make a reasonable living, or part of it, out of it.

We are in luck as the photography industry offers us a plethora of training opportunities, conventions, seminars and the recognised distinctions of Licentiate, Associate and Fellowship. There is an almost bewildering choice of courses in all variety of genres taught by those willing to pass their knowledge on.

In my opinion, although there is no legal requirement (and that is a shame), the distinction system is of immense value. A Licentiate qualification is one that defines us as competent and able to produce material of "marketable quality". Therefore a consumer could approach a Licentiate photographer and be confident in their money being well spent for the photographic product being offered.

Photographic Societies take their Distinction awards very seriously and none are awarded without serious effort, work and undeniable skill demonstrated by the candidate. It should be an aspiration of all serious photographers to achieve at least a base level of distinction with an "L".

The Licentiate in a day workshop will take you through all the elements that make a successful submission to a Licentiate Distinction, from composition and lighting through to posing, creative elements and colour temperature.

All delegates will experience the opportunity to shoot and develop their skills to the point where they should be able to produce a panel worthy of the Licentiate distinction.

We must stress however that completing the workshop will not guarantee you achieve the “L”, as that is up to you, however it will set you on the right path with the right ingredients. The rest is a combination of hard work, a creative eye, tenacity and perseverance. Remember you may not achieve it first time round, it is not meant to be an easy road.
